ABOUT THE STROKE CENTER

Stroke Center Doctors and Staff Group Shot

Established in 1983 under the leadership of Dr. JP Mohr, the Stroke Center is now directed by Dr. Randolph S. Marshall and includes 8 neurologists, 2 neuropyschologists and many more technical and research staff. More than 500 strokes per year are seen as inpatients in the Stroke Unit located in the Milstein Hospital Building. All faculty members of the Stroke Division also see patients in an outpatient office setting. An on-site Doppler lab with 6 full-time technicians and a lab supervisor performs more than 5,000 duplex carotid and transcranial Doppler studies per year. A number of ongoing research projects include publicly and privately funded studies on stroke and inflammation, carotid artery plaque morphology, natural history and treatment of brain AVMs, acute stroke trials, early treatment for aphasia, motor physiology in stroke patients, and a population-based epidemiology study examining risk factors in a tri-ethnic population. There are ongoing close collaborations with our Neurological Intensive Care Unit. The Neuro-ICU is an 18-bed dedicated neurological and neurosurgical unit with leading-edge, multi-modality monitoring for cerebrovascular disease and epilepsy patients. The NICU is co-directed by Dr. Stephan Mayer (Neurology) and Dr. E. Sander Connolly (Neurosurgery).
